The name ‘Neutral Bay’ originates from the early colonial period of Australia. Governor Phillip declared the bay a neutral harbour where all foreign ships could anchor and take on water and supplies safely. It was far enough away from Sydney Cove to discourage convicts from escaping and to keep possible enemies away from the main settlement.
By the beginning of the 20th century its burgeoning Arts and Crafts Federation style of architecture, much of which has been preserved and restored today, attracted the arty alternative set who appreciated this new and more individual style. Superb examples can be found on Neutral Bay’s premier waterfront street; Shellcove Road, where majestic mansions stand hand-in hand with classic Federation and Art Deco apartments.
Today a mixed demographic of all ages enjoys the many lifestyle benefits afforded with a Neutral Bay address. Running along Military Road and spilling down to the water’s edge, it includes the Neutral Bay Junction shopping area with Coles, Woolworths and a superb array of local shops and eateries along with the acclaimed and ever popular eateries on Grosvenor Road. Neutral Bays’ city fringe locale means commuting is breeze. For those that enjoy viewing Sydney’s iconic landmarks on the way to work, the Hayes Street ferry wharf offers regular services and provides a stunning morning or evening commute.
